Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children - a long time to be away or to divide a familiy. And, for children facing a medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House is that "home away from home" for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost.
RMD Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child - not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head to rest at night. RMD Houses believe that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.
Ronald McDonald Houses provide home-cooked meals, private bedrooms and family-like support. There are many ways you can pitch in. Check our your local Ronald McDonald House's website for a list of volunteer opportunities. Most have simple wishlists where you can help keep their pantry stocked. Many allow volunteers to help with yard work or prepare meals for the families staying with them. There are even opportunities for volunteers to provide service hours - such as getting scout troops, church groups and college students involved.
Thanks to volunteers reaching out to us, we are currently in Ronald McDonald Houses in New Brunswick, NJ, Providence, RI, Grand Rapids, MI and Denver, CO. Email us if you'd like to donate shawls to one of these Houses. Donated wishlist items are shipped directly to us and we package the totes and ship when needed only to RMD Houses where a contact person has been established. There are so many more Ronald McDonald Houses we'd love your help connecting with. You don't need to knit or crochet to bring this program to your local house. Share our mission on Facebook, Instagram and Ravelry. We have a lot of moms who could use a little love right now.
